A poem of sorts - My memories of a Proper Walk
Open Plains and Maasai
spaces
Pokot ways in an
African Oasis
Walked through time
and some memorable days
On a proper walk looking
for the old ways
Knowledge was found
across the Rift Valley spaces
Came back with images
of these African places!
The journey was long
and proper in some ways
You change inside if
you can keep the demons at bay
So many emotions like
the suns gentle rays
We walked 150 miles in
what seems longer than ten days
The waters of Bogoria
tested our metal
With some of us
reaching that state of temper mental
The journey between
was what kept us quite lean
As the days to Baringo
made even the camels seem mean
While the Journey to
Baringo was the proper part of the walk
The emotional journey
inside is what builds from the start
The faces of Makindu Children
are etched in your mind
As you follow the track
and begin the long climb
Poisoned arrows and
bows made of wood
The smiles on the
village children know only the good
Dancing and singing is
the Pokot way
While the rustling of
cattle keep the warriors at play
It’s an odd thing to
see the new ways mixed with the old
The cell phone in hand
while trying not to be cold
These people of the
rift are beautiful and lean
Can they change with
the times yet keep their hands clean?
Considered by those in
attendance to be a very proper walk!
The highlight for me
was sitting near to Jasper listening to him talk
Journeys like this
last a lifetime inside
If you can capture all
those memories on that Laikipa -Nairobi ride
